The older I get, the more I can see this is true: Gratitude+Writing it down=Pure Inner Joy.
Yes–I can think throughout the day, “I’m thankful for this or I’m so lucky with that.” But I soon forget those daily, amazing happenings in my life. However, when I literally take three minutes each night to write down five things I’m grateful for, I can look back over these lists and see the hand of the Lord in my life on a daily basis. My gratitude journals are simply among my most prized possessions.
I know that happiness comes in the ordinary details of life and when you begin your own gratitude journal, it’s important not to be general and instead write down the details.
For example, take this trip to the pumpkin patch.
General would be: “I’m thankful for pumpkins” or “I’m thankful for family” or “Im thankful to be a nana.”
Detailed would be: “I’m thankful for the Hall family who invited us to their patch to pick pumpkins.” “I’m thankful for warm weather that provided for a perfect picking-pumpkins experience.” “I’m thankful that Oakley has the most caring, wonderful parents in the world.” “I’m thankful for the wonder and excitement in Oakley’s eyes as she picked pumpkins–and squash and tomatoes!”
This season of thanksgiving, get detailed and take a few moments to discover all the wonder around you. This will help you recognize and remember all of God’s kindness that surrounds you each day!
